Fostering Growth and Engagement: Lessons from Running 1-on-1 Meetings to Boost Your Team’s Performance

As the former Director of WordPress Development, I had the privilege of leading a talented and diverse team of developers. While their levels of experience varied, each individual brought unique perspectives and strengths to the table. Looking back on this experience, I can confidently say that the lessons I learned have been invaluable, and they continue to shape my approach as I embark on a new chapter with my current company.

In my previous role, I was responsible for a wide range of tasks, from growing the WordPress development department to providing technical guidance and support. I assisted with project estimates and budgeting, answered questions from the development team and other internal stakeholders, and worked closely with the design department to ensure seamless collaboration.

Developing and maintaining a comprehensive training plan for new hires was another key aspect of my responsibilities. I wanted to ensure that each team member, regardless of their experience level, had the resources and support they needed to thrive. Fostering an environment of learning and growth was a top priority, and I actively participated in code reviews and pair programming sessions to provide mentorship and guidance.

The Team

My team was a diverse group, with members representing a range of backgrounds and skill levels. This diversity was both a challenge and an opportunity, as it required me to adapt my management style to cater to the unique needs and strengths of each individual.

Geographically, my team was distributed, with each member residing in a different state. This presented unique communication and collaboration challenges, but it also allowed us to tap into a wider pool of talent.

The 1-on-1 Meeting Process

One of the cornerstones of my management approach was the regular 1-on-1 meetings I held with each team member. These bi-weekly sessions quickly became the highlight of my week, as they allowed me to connect with my team on a deeper level, understand their individual needs, and foster an environment of learning and growth.

I introduced a structured approach to these meetings, with each team member responsible for sharing their updates and discussion topics in a shared Google Doc. This format enabled us to have focused, productive conversations that addressed their progress, challenges, and support needs.

Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles

When I first took on the responsibility of conducting these 1-on-1 meetings, I’ll admit that I felt a sense of hesitation and uncertainty. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to connect with my team members or keep them engaged throughout the process.

However, as I dove into these meetings, I found that the 1-on-1 format came naturally to me. By taking the time to understand each team member’s personality and communication style, I was able to build trust and foster open, productive conversations.

Benefits and Outcomes

As the 1-on-1 meetings became a regular part of our team’s routine, I began to see the immense benefits they brought to the table. The team’s productivity, morale, and overall performance improved significantly, as each member felt heard, supported, and empowered to tackle their challenges head-on.

The success of the 1-on-1 meetings also inspired me to introduce bi-weekly team town halls, where we could discuss relevant topics, share code solutions, and even engage in non-work-related discussions. These additional touchpoints further strengthened the team’s cohesion and communication.

Lessons Learned and How They Benefit My Current Role

One of the key lessons I learned during this experience was the power of vulnerability as a leader. By being open and honest about my own fears and uncertainties, I was able to create an environment where my team members felt comfortable doing the same. This, in turn, fostered a deeper level of trust and collaboration within the group.

I also learned the value of the “1% better each day” mindset, which I shared with my team. By encouraging them to focus on incremental improvements, I watched them grow and develop their skills over time, with the cumulative effect being truly remarkable.

As I transition into my current role, I’m excited to apply these lessons and insights to benefit my new team. The ability to connect with individuals on a personal level, foster an environment of trust and growth, and empower my team to continuously improve are invaluable skills that will undoubtedly contribute to the success of my current company.

Embracing the Future with Confidence

As I embark on this new chapter, I’m confident that the lessons I’ve learned will continue to shape my approach as a leader and contribute to the success of my current organization. I encourage other managers and team leaders to implement similar practices within their own teams, as the rewards of this approach are truly immeasurable.

By fostering an environment of open communication, empathy, and continuous learning, you can unlock the full potential of your team and position your business for long-term success. And by leveraging these experiences to optimize your online presence, you can further amplify your impact and reach new heights in the digital landscape.
